Historically, the church of Sardis was founded by Paul or one of his disciples in the first century AD. It was located in a valley near a river, surrounded by hills and mountains.

Sardis was the capital of the kingdom of Lydia, a wealthy and powerful nation that ruled over most of western Asia Minor. The city was famous for its culture, trade, and innovation. 

It was the first city in the world to mint coins, and it had a magnificent temple dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of hunting and fertility. 

To begin our study of the meaning of Smyrna and what it represents, let us read Christ’s letter to the church of Smyrna.

CHRIST’S LETTER TO THE CHURCH

Revelation 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment, and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Sardis was also a centre of religious diversity, where various cults and faiths coexisted, including Judaism and Christianity.

KEY #1. The first key, Revelation 3: 1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; identifies the head of the church.

KEY #2. The second key, Revelation 3: 1b, These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, identifies the key function of the church as having the seven spirits of God, each inspecting one of the seven branches of God.

Let us reason out the meaning of the seven spirits of God, the seven eyes of God, each one inspecting one of the seven churches and branches of God’s service, which is represented by the seven golden candlesticks below.

Zechariah 4:1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, 2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:

To understand the role of Jesus as the foundation of the organization called God, let us consider this passage: Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks. Revelation 2:1

Unveiling the Inspectorate Power of Sardis!

Let us relate the above passage with its ancient symbolic meaning using the symbol Zerubbabel in the following passage. This will enable us to get the root meaning or functions of the seven eyes of God.

Zechariah 4:8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 9 The hands of Zerubbabel [A symbol for Jesus] have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you.

10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel [A symbol for Jesus] with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

The Inspectorate Power of Sardis!

Which run to and fro through the whole earth for what? These are they whom the LORD hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

For what reason? And they answered the angel of the LORD that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest. Zechariah 1: 11

So, the seven eyes and the two anointed ones associated with the eyes are for inspection of the earth, to maintain standards, and to warn the lacking. The warning is necessary to hold erring officers and members of the public accountable for their misdeeds!

Those who kill, destroy and commit all manner of atrocities often do not take these inspectors who are in spirit into consideration. Nothing escapes their watch.

AN INACTIVE BRANCH OF GOD

KEY #3. The third key. I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead.

Jesus addressed the church of Sardis in Revelation 3:1-6, through its head angel, and He had some harsh words for them. He said that they had a reputation for being alive, but they were actually dead. He accused them of having incomplete works, meaning that they did not fulfill their calling and mission as His followers. This means they are largely inactive.

COUNTERFEIT PRODUCTS AND SUBSTANDARD LEADERS, THE BANE OF SARDIS

From fake and counterfeit products to substandard leaders. The problem of Sardis starts from its upper chambers at the very least from the level of the gods. Had they done their job, those that depend on them to escape from large karmic debts will have done better.

Their representatives among humans may also have done better. These are the standard organizations of the world. 

But their counterparts in journalism are the most active, risking their lives in the process. 

We have to remember that the angels who rebelled against God in Genesis 6 and left their first estate and intermarried with the daughters of men were watchers. They were angels. Meaning that the problem may also be from the higher ones.

The failure of Sardis as the inspectorate and standards branch of God is responsible in part, for the falling standards in human husbandry which has spilled over to governance.

Isn’t it a blunder that a nation considered the flagship of the world will have a president that will consider it normal, that injecting a person with insecticide will kill the COVID-19 virus?

For the avoidance of doubt, such an important country considering its size and power out not to have at the helm of affairs anyone below the seventh wheel of life, an anointed king. 

Human Development Index of God

Ideally, such an important and powerful country should be led by someone who has completed the wheel of life and is therefore very conversant with the law of cause and effect. 

Such an individual should be from the prophet division or higher, considering the inbuilt capacity of this country to be used to do enormous good or wreck considerable evil on others. This will in turn bring untold damage to itself as karmic debts.

God's rule of human husbandry in Isaiah 28 specifies that we have to progress from a captain of tens to a captain of fifties, then of multiples of thousands, and then as a regional leader before we are finally given the position as a leader of a nation. All these steps must be accomplished precept upon the precept of God on all the issues in the wheel of life. 

Using the incremental steps of entrusting power and responsibility to an individual based on the Human Development Index of God is not followed by the spiritual rulers of this world. 

How do you explain a situation whereby a president assembles a team of liars to seduce their nation to go to war for crude oil interests, and then laid false charges of possessing weapons of mass destruction on the leader and the nation they intend to invade in order to have their way? 

What about the massive karmic debt incurred for the destruction of that country?

Had Sardis, warned Thyatira the gods of human husbandry, against including such immature leaders into the pool of leaders to be elected to power? 

Can the higher leaders of these two branches of God absolve themselves from the spilling of blood that followed the devastation of Iraq as a nation in peace with itself before its invasion?

THE WATCHMEN AND WATCHERS OF GOD

This church at the upper level is made up of the watchers of the human race. Lower down the line we have the watchmen and women. The starting point for Sardis is from the Aaronic priesthood. That is from the prophet upward, but those who understand the precepts of God even from the class of Barley and have the gospel of Jesu Christ also belong to this house of God.

Who are the members of Smyrna in the world today? At the upper level, we may not see them, but among us are the investigative journalists, the ‘’pastors’’ in government and public institutions who see danger or deviation from God’s standard and criticize the authorities often risking lives in the process. This is why Jesus requested especially the upper echelon to among other things Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die:

This leads us to the fourth key.

4. The fourth key; Revelation 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die:

This key or code of the watchman charges him or her to not only be watchful but also strengthen those that are steadfast and ready to die for God.

This criticism of Jesus implied that the workers in this house of God are simply not doing their work. They are to inspect, warn and maintain standards as well as strengthen the faithful of God.

But I bet you, the children of God suffer more from want than any other group on earth. Worse still, even if you are able to identify your obligations to God very clearly, they treat you as if the success of your project and its profits belong to you rather than to God as an integral part of the obligations of God to his creatures.

The dearth of help from the God-ordained helpers of the faithful of God means that humans have to contribute more to worthy causes to help those God has entrusted to his work.

It means that we have to contribute more to what we have identified as the causes of God, rather than waiting for heaven. This is because those responsible for channelling resources to those handling God’s projects are simply not interested. Or they may be operating by other standards, not of God.  

Despite this, the charge remains the same: Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die:

Has The Church Of Sardis Kept Faith As Heaven's Quality Assurance Department?

Despite the above, however, there are some Smyrna's who have kept vigil at their stations to give God’s work the standard it deserves. This is what Jesus said of them Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. Revelation 3: 4.

The white symbolizes impartiality in the execution of their work. Remember that standards are not only in manufacturing but also in the judiciary, administration, governance, policing, human, animal, plant, and breeding, and all the branches of God! These days we talk about environmental standards and so on and so forth.
